Major innovations
This programme includes the development of museographic and performance spaces that will make the chateau a major site for cultural events. The work will start with the installation of a self-guided visit aided by various digital aids.
It also includes the on-site development of three museums, all to be labeled “Museum of France”, with areas for exploring and teaching. The museums will cover the themes of military architecture on borders, the display of an exceptional collection of weapons, hats and other equipment used by the French army from 1717 to 1917, but also the memory of the Haïtian struggle for independence and the abolition of slavery. Paying tribute to the life and works of Toussaint Louverture, an emblematic character in the struggle for independence on the island and the abolition of slavery, will be a theme that will run through all three museums. Held prisoner at the chateau, he died in detention in 1803.
Supporting the renaissance
The programme of restoration, renovation and development represent a real renaissance or new life for the chateau, whose vocation is to become a major cultural and tourist for the region and for France, but also for neighbouring Switzerland, Italy and Germany.
It will cost several million euros, 65% of which will come from public funds (Europe, Ministry for Culture, the Region, DRAC, County, Pontarlier District Council, Pontarlier Town Council). To fully achieve the goals set, the chateau will also need funding from donations, commercial and private sponsorship.
As an Historic Monument, the chateau is authorised to receive donations from private individuals, and from private company sponsorship and partnerships.
Professionals, join us in this adventure
The renovation of the chateau, the development of its museums and of a self-guided tour, the design of new spaces and their amenities and scenography will involve a large number of professional experts and tradespeople.
Public Contracts
The maintenance and renovation of the chateau will also involve a number of maintenance, equipment and restoration projects. Under the control of the CCGP (Grand Pontarlier District Council) in conjunction with the regional body for the Conservation of Historical Monuments, the technical design and planning aspects will be dealt with by an Historical Monuments or national heritage architect. Work will be carried out by specialised companies and their sub-contractors.
Many of these projects will be awarded as part of a number of public tenders.

Sponsorship through work or consultancy
One of the ways companies can provide sponsorship is in providing funding not directly in monetary terms but through the provision of products or services in the areas that interest them. This is known as “sponsorship in kind or through consulting services”
The eligibility criteria for this type of sponsorship are exactly the same as for those provided in a monetary form.
Employment candidates
The Chateau regularly recruits seasonal staff for reception, cultural guides and technical requirements in order to assist with the increase in numbers of visitors and the events organised on site. Interested in joining the team at the Chateau? Keep an eye out for the job adverts!

The Grand Pontarlier District Council, for this programme, is authorised to provide tax deductible receipts that will allow:
- private individuals to deduct 66% of your donation from your taxable income
- companies, according to the 1st August 2003 sponsorship law, for donations made in this way to benefit from a 60% tax reduction on the amounts donated, capped at 0.5% of turnover.

Here are the main budget items of the cultural and tourist development programme for the Chateau de Joux covering the period 2020 -2030.
These are the major projects that will start in 2020!
- Installing a space dedicated to “fortress and freedoms” in the gunpowder room at the chateau
- The creation of a new Museum of Military Art and History at the Chateau in the Vauban barracks
- The creation of an exhibition space dedicated to commemorating the life of Toussaint Louverture and the battles for freedom of nations in the dungeon
- Developing a digital guide to help visitors explore the site
- Adapting, equipping and making safe the self-guided tour, including reduced mobility access
- Developing the tourism opportunities
- Organising themed, temporary exhibitions at the chateau in connection with the history of the site and the area
- Conservation and renovation of the Historical Monument
- Conserving, enhancing and enriching the “Museum of France” collections of military art and the collections of Haïtian artworks
- Enhancing and promoting the understanding of the chateau and the surrounding area

Participate in the Bern Mission
Participate in the renaissance of the chateau by making a donation to the Fondation du Patrimoine.
Chosen by the Bern Mission, the first phase of work aims to restore the various drawbridges and fixed bridges. This restoration is essential initial step in order to keep the site open to the public and to consider further stages of work.
